The stringent operational limits, constraints and the dynamics in the grid due to mix of energy sources, competitive markets and deregulation is causing increasing stresses in all the equipment and systems in the power system as a whole. The power plant unit interaction interlocks and protection and power system protection in the presence of such unprecedented grid dynamics is proving to be a challenge. The industry has swiftly responded and is gearing up to closely track, monitor and intervene optimally by use of sophisticated devices and systems.
